Area V – Business

 

AREA V: PRE-PROFESSIONAL MAJOR AND ELECTIVE COURSES FOR A MAJOR IN BUSINESS AT AUBURN UNIVERSITY

All majors in Business are 123 semester hours. The maximum (combined) number of hours that the student may transfer from the 2-year institution is 61 semester hours.

  • Students are allowed to choose one of 2 core options.
    • Option 1: Complete 1 core Literature course and 2 core History courses.

      Under Option 1, the following is recommended for completion of the STARS Guide:

      • 6 hours in Area I: ENGL 101 and 102
      • 12 hours in Area II: One core Literature; one core Fine Art (signified with an ‘A’ in area II); PHL 206 or IDS 102; and HUM 101, HUM 102 or PHL 106
      • 11 hours in Area III: Two sequential lab sciences and MTH 112
      • 9 hours in Area IV: One History course; ECO 231 and ECO 232
      • Area V: BUS 263; BUS 271; CIS 146 or 147; BUS 241 and 242; MTH 120 or 125; the second sequential History course and SPH 106 or SPH 107

        Allowances and restrictions on transfer hours for Option 1:

        • Students who complete Areas I-V as listed above will receive 2 hours of transfer credit for Microcomputer and 3 hours of transfer credit for MTH 125 in order to stay within the 61 hour transfer maximum. See alternate information below for students who plan to major in Accounting.
        • Students who complete MTH 120 or 125 in Area III may be eligible to transfer 1-2 hours of free elective credit.
        • Students who plan to major in Accounting should not complete BUS 242. Accounting majors who complete MTH 112 in Area III and MTH 120 or 125 in Area V may be eligible to transfer 1-2 hours of free elective credit.  Accounting majors who complete MTH 120 or 125 in Area III may be eligible to transfer 4-5-hours of free elective credit. Students will not be allowed to exceed the 61 hour transfer maximum.
    • Option 2: Complete 2 core Literature courses and 1 core History course.

      Under Option 2, the following is recommended for completion of the STARS Guide:

      • 6 hours in Area I: ENGL 101 and 102
      • 12 hours in Area II: Two-Literature sequence; one core Fine Art (signified with an ‘A’ in area II); and PHL 206 or IDS 102
      • 11 hours in Area III: Two sequential lab sciences and MTH 112
      • 12 hours in Area IV: One History course; ECO 231 and ECO 232; and one of the following: ANT 200, PSY 200, or SOC 200
      • Area V: BUS 263; BUS 272; CIS 146 or 147; BUS 241 and 242; MTH 120 or 125; and SPH 106 or SPH 107

        • Students who complete MTH 120 or 125 in Area III may be eligible to transfer 1-2 hours of free elective credit.
        • Students who plan to major in Accounting should not complete BUS 242. Accounting majors who complete MTH 112 in Area III and MTH 120 or 125 in Area V may be eligible to transfer 1-2 hours of free elective credit.  Accounting majors who complete MTH 120 or 125 in Area III, may be eligible to transfer 4-5-hours of free elective credit. Students will not be allowed to exceed the 61 hour transfer maximum.
  • General Core
    • Students who choose to complete U.S. History instead of World History or Western Civilization may be required to complete additional course work to satisfy student learning objectives.
  • Specific Business program requirements
    • Students planning to major in Aviation Management or Professional Flight Management should complete PHY 201 and PHY 202 in Area III
    • Students planning to major in Accounting should not complete BUS 242
    • Due to foreign language requirements and program variations, students planning to pursue International Business should follow the STARS Guide specifically designed for that major.
  • Restrictions on transfer courses
    • Developmental, remedial, or technical courses will not transfer
    • Students should not take Principles of Marketing or Principles of Finance
    • A maximum of four semester hours of physical education may transfer
